Origin

The Welsh Terrier was created in Wales. They were used for hunting purposes. They hunted foxes, otters etc. In 1884 it was introduced in England. In 1888 the Welsh Terrier were brought to United States by Prescott Lawrence. In a period of 100 years the breed became very popular in United States.

General Description

The Welsh Terrier is a medium sized dog about 19 inches in height. They have a stout muscular body and a brave expression in their face. The Welsh Terrier has a flat wide head and a long square muzzle with a bid black nose at the tip. The fur is such arranged in their muzzle that it looks like the beard of an old man. Their teeth is sharp enough for a scissor bite and their eyes are round and solid black in colour. The Welsh Terrier has small ears folder in front and their neck is long and muscular. They have long and muscular limbs and legs and their limbs are totally covered with fur. Their tail is long and docked. They have a rough double coat and mainly found in red and black colours.

Character

The Welsh Terrier is a great hunter and they are very conscious about what is going on around. The breed is intelligent in nature and they have a tendency of satisfying their masters. The Welsh Terriers are very cute in nature and they are capable of being very friendly. They are excellent to kids and love their families very much. The breed is never aggressive and love to stay with their family. Swimming and digging are two of their great hobbies. As they are great hunters so they would chase any moving creature so it is better to keep them in protected area or keep an eye on them. Good training required otherwise they can grow aggressive. Sometimes they may be stubborn and destructive. You should not leave them alone.

Temperament

The Welsh Terrier loves human interaction very much and they expect attention and love from their owners. Not recommended for those who cannot devote time for their pets. They are great family dogs and have a well balanced temperament. These dogs are very energetic and intelligent at the same time. They seek a lot of exercise daily. They are sometimes stubborn and independent and they are not at all recommended for inexperienced owners. The Welsh Terrier are cool to children but as they are hunters they may chase other small animals. They do not mix well with strangers and their protective nature makes them great watch dogs.

Training

This breed is very energetic and intelligent. Sometimes they may be stubborn but training should not be harsh. Training should be consistent, fair and firm.

Health

The breed can be affected by thyroid, glaucoma, epilepsy, allergies etc. Their average life span is 12-14 years.
