Origin
The accurate origin of the Weimaraner is not known by anyone. A group people say that this breed was created by mixing many germen pointers together. Braken is a type of germen Hound. This dog is the ancestor of the Weimaraner. Some people even say that the Weimaraner has been created by breeding the normal pointers and the yellow pointer. In 1600 century the first dog of this breed was seen in the drawing of Van Dyck. The Weimaraner was mainly used as a hunter and retriever. The breed is also used by the police and military as a rescue dog. In 1929 the Weimaraner was first introduced to United States.
General Description
The Weimaraner is a large breed about 27 inches in height. They are not at all bulky and have a well built and muscular body. Their head is round in shape and a bit flat at the top. They have a long sharp muzzle with a black nose at the tip. The Weimaraner has round hazel eyes and their ears are large pendant shaped and hang by their head. They have a short neck and a wide shoulder touching their elbows. The breed has long thin limbs and arched toes. Their tail is short and docked and their stomach is sleek. They have a shiny short coat which is mainly found in silver or grey colour.
Character
The Weimaraner is very enthusiastic and happy by nature. The breed is very much intelligent and independent in nature. They love to do what they like. This is the reason they should be provided socialization classes from childhood. Generally the Weimaraner is not that good to strangers and are aggressive to other dogs. But if they are trained properly they would get rid of all these. The Weimaraner is very much devoted to its family and very protective of their family. They are excellent with kids but they are not recommended for very small kids due to their size. They can kill small animals and are great jumpers. They love human companion ship and love to stay attached with the family. You should not leave them alone for a long time. The Weimaraner love to bark a lot.
Temperament
The Weimaraner is very intelligent by nature but at the same time they are stubborn and love to do what they like. They are very enthusiastic and sweet. The breed do not mix well with strangers and are aggressive to other animals. They are not at all safe for small animals because of their hunting habit. Good to children but not recommended for extremely small children. The Weimaraners are extremely devoted to their family and are also protective of their family. Socialization classes are required from an early age. They are very much fond of human companionship and should not be left alone. They are not at all suitable for kennel life.
Training
The Weimaraner is very intelligent and enthusiastic. They love to learn. Harsh training methods are not recommended. Training should be done with consistency, fairness and love.
Health
Generally the breed is a healthy one but they should be fed with care as they can be affected by bloat. They may also suffer from hip Dysplasia. Their average life span is 10-12 years.
