Origin

The place of creation of the Tibetan Spaniel is Tibet as the name suggests but the time or the year is not known by anyone. The Tibetan Spaniel has been seen in the Chinese artworks belonging to the 12th century and that is the reason it can be said that the Tibetan Spaniel are really old dogs. Pug and the Pekingese are said to be their ancestors. This breed was mainly kept by the rich people and it also became very popular in Asia. The Tibetan Spaniel was also kept in the monasteries for guarding purpose. The breed came to England in the 19th century and in 1984 they were introduced in United States.

General Description

The Tibetan Spaniel is a small dog about 10 inches in height. They have a small stout body and they are very cute to look at. Their head is round and small and they have a small pointed muzzle with a black nose at the tip. Their eyes are totally black and round in shape coming out from the socket. They have a small neck and a broad chest touching their shoulders. Their body looks like a cotton ball and their tail is large a fluffy. The Tibetan Spaniel has large ears covered with fur and hanging by their head. The Tibetan Spaniel has small limbs and legs close to the ground. Their coat consists of long fur and they are mainly found in all types of colours.

Character

The Tibetan Spaniel is very cute and lovely by nature. They are very good to children and love human companionship to a great deal. They love to spend time with the family and they are very much protective of the children. They do not bark much until they smell some danger. They do not like strangers and do not mix with them well. Actually they are very cool to those people who they know well. If socialized properly they are also good to other animals.

Temperament

The Tibetan Spaniel is a very intelligent breed. They are very much loyal and devoted to their families. They love human companionship to a great deal and love to stay with the family. They should not be left alone for a long time. The Tibetan Spaniel is so close to human beings that they understand their feelings, emotions etc. They are good to children but they are better to grown up kids. The breed are very much protective of their families and they are not fond of strangers. They only cherish those who they know well. They are never aggressive to any one and the Tibetan Spaniel do not bark much. The breed can make the family alert of any danger and can be used as good watch dogs.

Training

The Tibetan Spaniel is very intelligent but they may also be stubborn at some times. Training the breed is a bit difficult as they get bored very fast of same training methods. They are also a bit independent in nature. The Tibetan Spaniel always have a tendency to satisfy their owners. They need to be socialized from an early age and training should be done with love, consistency, patience and fairness.

Health

Generally the breed is a healthy one but some may suffer from patellar lucation. Their average life span is 12-15 years.
