Origin

In Chinese, Tibetan Mastiff is called 藏獒 (Zang‘Ao), means big ferocious dog. It is a very expensive dog that can sell for millions of yuan. Just like all other mastiffs the Tibetan Mastiff also was created from the Mollosian dogs which were found in Tibet. The Mastiff dogs were a result of the mixing of the dogs of Alexander with the local dogs. Alexander took these dogs to Europe. In the 1800 century the Tibetan Mastiff was introduced to Queen Victoria as a gift. From that period many of Tibetan Mastiffs were brought to England and now the breed has become really rare in Europe but it is very much popular in England.

General Description

The Tibetan Mastiff is a large breed about 28 inches in height. They have a large body and they have a muscular and stout body. The Tibetan Mastiff has a big and broad head and a short sharp muzzle with a black nose at the tip. The Tibetan Mastiff has small eyes set apart and their jaws hanging. Their ears are not too big and they hang by their head. They have stocky neck and a wide chest touching their shoulders. Their limbs and legs are long and muscular. They have a long curly tail and their coat is thick which protects them from cold weather. They are mainly found in black and tan, grey, black and brown, golden etc colours.

Character

The Tibetan Mastiff is a cool breed and they have a calm and quiet appearance. They are very much fond of human companion ship and they love to stay attached with their families. They are very much protective of their family and they can do anything to protect their family. They cannot mix with the strangers well but if properly trained they would be good to strangers even. The Tibetan Mastiff is very much intelligent and they should not be treated harshly as if harsh treatment is given they might become stubborn. They are not that playful and they behave with other animals properly is trained properly from childhood.

Temperament

This breed is dominant at times and that’s why they need a dominant owner. This is a very good dog, they are sweet and loveable but they are not recommended for novice owners. They are so big in size that they are not at all at all recommended for houses with kids. This breed is a giant and they are also protective in nature. It is very confident and gentle. They would not harm the kids but they are not recommended for them due to their size. They are very loyal to their families and they may even be dangerous for trespassers. They cannot mix with strangers sometimes due to their shyness. The Tibetan mastiff is a great companion and family dog. They are very alert and prove to be great watch dogs. If early training is provided they are also good to other pets.

Training

The Tibetan mastiff should be trained right from child hood. If it’s not trained properly then this breed can become very ill behaved. The breed is a bit dominant and stubborn in nature so they must be handled with firmness. Training should be done with consistency and firmness.

Health

The Tibetan mastiffs can be affected by CHD and thyroid. Their average life span is 15 years.
