Origin
This breed evolved in Germany and Schnauze is a German word which means muzzle. These dogs were generally used for hunting rats and other small animals but they are also good watch dogs.
General Description
The Standard Schnauzer is a strong and stout breed. It has an alert appearance and it is robust. They are medium sized. They have a large head and a big round muzzle with a black nose at the tip. They have two black eyes which are wide apart and seem like coming out of the socket. The fur on the muzzle is such that it looks like well shaped beard and moustache. The Schnauzer has a short neck and a well balanced body. All their legs and limbs are muscular and parallel. Their ears are short and folded in front. They do not have a broad chest and their shoulders are sloped down wards. The schnauzer has padded feet and sharp teeth enough for scissor bite. They have a double coat with a rough outer and smooth inner coat. They are mainly found in black, solid black and silver colours.
Character
The Standard Schnauzer is a gentle and very enthusiastic breed. It is a balanced breed and very playful in nature. They prove to be good companions and they are also excellent to children. Early socialization classes are required to make them properly socialized. Training this breed is quiet easy as they are obedient. Because of their brave and responsible personality they are good watch dogs. They are good family dogs but sometimes they may become dominant. Proper training can heal this up. The Standard Schnauzer is very protective of their family and they do not mix well with strangers. However they should not be left alone with non canine pets. The breed takes two to three years to get fully matured.
Temperament
The Standard Schnauzer is very calm and gentle in nature. They are brave, well natured and very much responsible regarding their jobs. Not at all recommended for novice owners due to their dominating attitude. They are very good to children but they should not be left alone with small pets. If properly trained then they can be well socialized. The Standard Schnauzer is a great family dog but they don’t like strangers. Some of them can be even aggressive to other dogs. This breed is a bit dominant. They do not have a biting attitude but they are so confident about their size that they use that to get done whatever they want. As I told before they are only recommended for experienced dog owners.
Training
This is a stubborn breed so early obedience classes are required. They are very intelligent and they are quick learners. They should not be treated with heavy hands as they may not respond. Training should be done with consistency, fairness and firmness.
Health
This is a healthy breed but they may have some major issues. They may be affected by hip dysplasia and cataracts. They have high tolerating power. Their average life span is 10-12 years and litter rate is 8.
