Origin
The Soft coated Wheaten Terriers were created in Ireland. The breed was used for many purposes. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers were used for hunting, looking after live stock and for herding also. Till 1933 they were only popular in Ireland and after they were also taken to United States. After a period of forty years this breed was introduced by the American Kennel Club.
General Description
The Soft coated Wheaten Terrier is a medium sized breed about 20 inches high. They have a well built physique. The Soft coated Wheaten Terrier has a round head and a long round muzzle with a black nose at the tip. Their eyes are black and round in shape. They have small ears folded in front and they have a lot of fur on their face. Their neck is thick and they have a wide chest touching the shoulders. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers has short legs and limbs and totally covered by fur. Their tails is short and docked. They have a thick coat found in variety of colours.
Character
The Soft coated Wheaten Terrier is a lovely breed and love human companionship very much. They love to stay attached with their family. They are excellent to children and they are also good to other dogs if properly trained. But the Soft coated Wheaten Terriers should not be left alone with cats and non canine pets as may kill them. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are good to strangers and have a gentle disposition. They do not bark much. The breed is very intelligent and sometimes may be a bit stubborn and independent.
Temperament
The Soft coated Wheaten Terrier is a very brave breed. They are dominant in nature, very intelligent but have a gentle disposition. They are good to other dogs if they are properly raised with them but they may be dangerous for small animals as they are hunters. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is small in size but they are always ready to fight with other big breeds if they smell a danger. They are not as aggressive as other terriers. Generally they are good to children but if treated badly they may get dangerous. They bark when needed and they are also not aggressive to strangers.
Training
The Soft coated Wheaten Terriers are intelligent but at the same time the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is very stubborn and independent in nature. They should be trained from an early age. Their trainer should be really dominating. They should be trained firmly. Constant harsh methods should not be used but training should be done with firmness, fairness and patience.
Health
Generally this breed is very allergic. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier can be affected by allergies, PLE, PLN. Their average life span is 12-15 years.
