Origin
The creation of the Skye Terrier was an accident. In the 17th century a Spanish ship wrecked near Scotland. The name of the place was Skye island. Because of that many Maltese dogs came to that island and mixed with the terriers and this breed was created. After two hundred years the Skye Terrier became popular in England.
General Description
The Skye Terrier is a small breed about 10 inches high. They have a small average built body and they look very cute. The main attractive part is their coat but I am coming to that later. The Skye Terrier has a round shaped head and a small muzzle with a black nose at the tip. generally their eyes cannot be seen due to their long hanging fur from their face. Their neck is small and they small limbs and legs. They basically look like toys. Due to their fur if you look at their body they look like a small rectangular box. The Skye Terrier has flat back side and they have a long straight tail. They have a long and straight coat with long hair hanging from their head till their foot. Due to that their legs, eyes nothing can be seen. They are main found in colours like grey blue, cream, dove etc.
Character
The Skye Terrier is very energetic, enthusiastic and a playful breed. They are very much devoted and loyal to their families. They are good to children but may be unpredictable when teased. They have a tendency of biting the strangers so strangers beware of them. They are not at all well behaved to other dogs and have a tendency of chasing small animals. The Skye Terriers love to bark. The Skye Terriers are very much protective of their families and can do anything to protect them. They love human companionship a great deal and love to stay with the family. Over years they have proved to be great companions. Some of them can be very stubborn.
Temperament
The Skye Terrier is very powerful and independent. Don’t go by their size. Though they are small they can be very aggressive at times. They are really dangerous to strangers and may even bite them. They are good to kids but the Skye Terriers should not be teased. The Skye Terriers love their family very much and prove to be great companions. They are very much protective of their family. They love to be attended by their masters. This breed is not good for other dogs and have a tendency of chasing other dogs. Though they are intelligent they may be stubborn at some times and that’s why they should be handled with firmness.
Training
The Skye Terriers need to be socialized from an early age. Some of them have a tendency of getting aloof and that’s why training is necessary. They should not be taught the same things again and again otherwise they would become bored fast. They need to be trained with consistency and fairness. Training should not be harsh.
Health
The Skye Terriers is generally a healthy breed. Their average life span is 10-12 years.
