Origin
Through DNA test it has been seen that this is one of the oldest breed in the world. The Shih Tzu evolved in China and Pekingese and Lhasa Apso are the ancestors of Shih Tzu. The Shih Tzu was a very popular breed in the Chinese Imperial court. The people of china never sold this breed outside the country. In 1930 the breed was brought to England. In 1946 Shih Tzu was introduced officially in England. In 1969 the breed was recognised in United States. Over years they have proved to be a great companion.
General Description
The Shih Tzu is a small breed about 11 inches in height. I must say that this breed is peculiar looking breed. Rather it looks odd and funny. They have a well built and muscular body. The Shih Tzu has a round head and small round muzzle with a black nose at the tip. Their eyes are large, round, hazel and protrudes out of their socket. The fur is such on their face that it seems like they have long hair and beard on their muzzle. They have a level backside and a small curly fluffy tail. They have long ears hanging by their head and their neck is brad but small. They have a wide chest and muscular and small limbs and legs. Their coat is long and silky and they can be found in many colours.
Character
The Shih Tzu is a small dog and very cute. They are very brave and please don’t go by their size. They are also independent of nature and a bit stubborn. They do not like strangers much. They love human companion ship to a great level. The Shih Tzu loves to be attended by human and love to stay with their families. They always love to do what they like. The Shih Tzu is very gentle and they are also kind. They should also not be overfed as they have a tendency to grow fat. Kids should not tease this breed or things can get worse. It may be difficult to train this breed. The Shih Tzu love to bark.
Temperament
This is a lovely breed, independent in nature but they are very loyal and devoted to their families. The Shih Tzu is basically a one master dog. They mostly obey one in the family. It is a very energetic breed, playful and love human companionship very much. In spite of being small in size they are brave and very protective of their masters. They love getting human attention a lot. The Shih Tzu is very alert and has a negative attitude towards strangers. This makes the Shih Tzu a great watch dog. Not at all recommended for children as they might get furious or even bite if they are teased and threatened. They may be totally aggressive towards other pets. The Shih Tzu should be trained properly from early age.
Training
The Shih Tzu is sometimes stubborn and love to do what they like. They should be trained firmly. But constant harsh methods should not be used. Training should be done with consistency, firmness and fairness.
Health
The Shih Tzu has a tendency of snoring. Some of them are affected by eye problems, ear problems and lungs problems. They should be given limited food as they have chances of growing fat. Their average life span is 15 years.
