Origin
The Scottish Deerhound is a greyhound version and this breed was created in Scotland. The Scottish Deerhound actually originated thousands of years ago and the breed was used to hunt deer. The Scottish Deerhound has a peculiar type of coat which acts as a protective shield in harsh weather. After the second world war due to lack of food the breed became obsolete.
General Description
The Scottish Deerhound is a giant dog and it is about 32 inches in height. They are very much athletic and have a large, fatless, sleek body. They have a tapered round head and a long pointed muzzle with a black nose at the tip. Their eyes are pendant shaped and black in colour. The Scottish Deerhound has small ears folded down which come to the level of their lips. Their teeth is sharp enough for a scissor bite. The Scottish Deerhound has a long neck and their neck and face is covered by a peculiar type of fur. They have a broad chest and very long and thin legs and limbs. They have a straight top level and a very long tail which almost reaches the ground. Their body is bony and their belly or stomach is sleek and fatless. They have peculiar type of coat with maximum fur at their face, neck etc and they are mainly found in grey, blue grey and brindle colours.
Character
The Scottish Deerhound is very smooth and gentle in nature and they are too good to kids. This is a strong breed and remarkable for their speed. They are very much athletic and very talented. They are good watch dogs and also capable of hunting. The Scottish Deerhound loves human interaction to a great level and loves to be attached with the family. They are great family dogs and prove to be great companions. The Scottish Deerhounds are very timid by nature so they should have good training to get rid of that. This breed is generally good with other dogs but as they are hunters they should not left alone with small non canine pets. They are not good at barking. The Scottish Deerhound always have tendency to make their masters happy and they can become stubborn at certain point of times.
Temperament
They Scottish Deerhound is very gentle and determined by nature. They are great racers and they are very enthusiastic and fun loving at the same time. They love human interaction a lot and love to stay with family. The Scottish Deerhound prove to be great companions and always have a tendency to please their family by different activities. The Scottish Deerhound always want to run and love to relax always. They need exercise not much but they love to run. This breed is great to children and other dogs. But in spite of being polite to strangers they do not mix with them well.
Training
Sometimes the Scottish Deerhound is a bit independent and stubborn in nature so it may be difficult to train them. But at the same time they are also intelligent and love to work. They should be trained with firmness, politeness and consistency.
Health
The Scottish Deerhound is generally affected by some genetic problems like, thyroid, heart diseases, bloat etc. They are also affected by allergies. Their average life span is 10 years.
