Origin

The Saluki is a very old b reed of Egypt. It is said that the Saluki was the gift of god so it was never sold but it was provided as gifts to rich people. Same as the Afghan Hounds. They are good hunters but they also so speedy that they are very much suitable for racing.

General Description

The Saluki is a peculiar looking dog. It is big in size about 28 inches high and it has a very skinny and thin figure. They have a small round shaped head and a long, pointed muzzle with a black nose at the tip. Their eyes are pendant shaped and set wide apart and their ears are covered with fluffy fur and they hang by their head. The Saluki has long neck and a skinny limbs and legs. They are good racers and that can be understood from their appearance. They have broad chest that touches the shoulders. The Saluki has a sleek stomach and a sleek body structure that makes them athletic. They have a large fluffy tail and a short coat. The Saluki has long silky fur only around their ears and tail. They are found in black, tan, red, gold and cream colours.

Character

The Saluki is very gentle and well behaved by nature. This breed loves to be isolated and do not love to be extremely attached with the family. They are very much suitable for kennel life. The Salukis are good to children as far as the kids are good to it. They are very cold towards the strangers. The Saluki is not fierce towards other dogs but they may be more comfortable towards other dogs of the same breed. They have a disastrous habit. There should not be any small animals in the house where Salukis are there as the Saluki has a habit of chasing the small animals and killing them. This is really dangerous. This nasty habit can’t be drawn out of the Salukis.

Temperament

The Saluki is a very intelligent breed. Generally they are not much attached with the family but they can become really attached with any one person of the family. They are good to kids but the children should also be good to them and should not tease them. They do not mix well with the strangers and they can prove to be very dangerous towards other small animals. Not only dangerous they even kill them and the worse part is that they can’t be socialized in this area.

Training

The Saluki should be trained and socialized from an early age. As they are intelligent and very calm it is easy to train them. Harsh methods should not be used as things may get worse. They should be trained with consistency, firmness and fairness.

Health

The saluki is generally a healthy breed compared to others but it may have some heriditery issues like cancer, eye problems etc. Their average life span is 10-12 years.
