Origin

In the 18th century the Pumi was created in Hungary. It was the result of mixing Puli with another type of cattle dog. The Puli is basically the Ancestor of the Pumi. The Puli was basically used to look after the cattle and the Pumi was used to drive cattle. In 1920 this breed was introduced and it is a rare breed.

General Description

The Pumi is a small breed about 17-18 inches high. It looks different from others. It has a medium sized body and they are not heavy. They have a round head and an odd type of sloping muzzle with a black nose at the tip. The muzzle is sloping directly from the forehead. They have two big eyes set apart and their ears are fluffy and curled in front. Their face is basically like a pipe. The Pumi has straight limbs and stretched legs. Their chest is broad and a level back side. The Pumi’s tail is just like a flower. Their neck is very broad and they have a coarse coat with curly hair all over and they are mainly found in white, ash, grey and blue colours.

Character

The Pumi is a great family dog. They love human companionship and love to stay with their family. This breed is not at all well to strangers. they are also very aggressive to other dogs and so early training and socialization classes are required. The Pumi is great to children and they are really loving to their family members. They are good guard dogs and they don’t trust anyone except their family members. The Pumi proves to be great companion and also a good sport dog.

Temperament

The Pumi is very calm and gentle in nature. They are brave, well natured and very much responsible regarding their jobs. Not at all recommended for novice owners due to their dominating attitude. They are very good to children but they should not be left alone with small pets. If properly trained then they can be well socialized. The Pumi is a great family dog but they don’t like strangers. some of them can be even aggressive to other dogs. This breed is a bit dominant. They do not have a biting attitude but they are so confident about their size that they use that to get done whatever they want. As I told before they are only recommended for experienced dog owners.

Training

The Pumi is a very intelligent breed so it is generally easy to train the breed but sometimes it may become stubborn. This breed must not be treated harshly. They should be treated with firmness and fairness.

Health

This breed is generally a healthy breed having an average life span of 12-14 years.
