Origin
The Pointer was created 200 years ago by mixing many breeds like the Italian Pointer, Foxhound, Blood hound, Greyhound etc. No other breeds are created with so many breeds and that’s the reason the Pointer has a great number of good characteristics. They are excellent hunters and can very nicely point where their hunt is hidden. It evolved in England in 1650 and in the 18th century this breed became popular.
General Description
The Pointer is generally lighter and taller in height than other British dogs. They are very swift and agile. They look handsome. They are tall with thin straight limbs. The Pointer has big ears hanging flat beside their head and their tail is long which rises in the air and it is a bit curled towards its tip. They are found in many colours and they have a thin coat.
Character
The Pointer is a very well built and athletic breed and also have a lot of stamina. They are very good hunters just as scent hounds. They are highly socialized, very much active in their work and have high tolerance power. Pointers are extremely hard workers and at the same time they are very close and loving to their families. Some are protective but most of them are good to strangers. Their bark is not at all famous.
Temperament
The Pointers behave very gently, they are very good to their families and at the same time they are very courageous as they are good hunters. Not at all protective to their families, very good to children and a very sweet breed. They are extremely good to children and other dogs but you cannot trust them with non canine pets. They are so sharp in nature that many of them learn how to open gates. As they are great warriors if they get a scent once they will follow it by neglecting all commands. They are not at all apartment dogs and should not be left alone for a long time. The foxhounds are not good watchdogs but they are good hunters.
Training
The Pointers are very difficult to housebreak. They should be socialized properly in order to prevent them from being timid and aloof. They should be trained properly with firmness. As they are the hunter dogs they should be trained like that.
Health
The Pointers are much more healthy compared to other dogs. They do not suffer from hip or bone problem as others. They should not be given excessive food as they have a tendency of putting on weight. Their average life span is 10-12 years and litter rate is 5-7. They have a short haired coat which is generally easy to groom and maintain. They are very active breed and need a lot of exercise regularly.
