Origin

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a 70 years old breed. There are many stories regarding the origin of these breeds. The Vikings brought the Swedish Vallhunds to Wales in the 800s. Some people say that the Swedish vallhunds are the ancestors of the Pembroke Welsh Corgis. The Celtic meaning of corgi is dog. The Pembroke Welsh Corgis are named after this. This breed is used for hunting, watch dog and also looking after livestock. In today’s date the cardigan welsh corgi has proved to be one of the most good companion.

General Description

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is long in shape but they are short in height. They are almost touched with the ground. They have a small body but the most attractive part of their body is their large triangular shaped ears which stand straight over their head. Pembroke Welsh Corgis have a small and flat head. Their muzzle is straight and long with a black nose on the tip. They have a long tail which touches the ground. Their chest is broad and touch the shoulders. They have small legs and limbs. Their topline is flat and the corgi has brown almond shaped eyes. They have a harsh double coat on their body and are found in many colours like brindle, blue merle, black, black and tan, red, fawn, sable etc.

Character

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is very obedient and gentle in nature. They are very much devoted to their families. They are also protective of their territory and family. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is very much secretive about the strangers but they love the family they live in very much. They always have a tendency to please the family members and they are also very gentle and good to children. Generally they are good but at certain times they may be harsh and aggressive toward other animals and pets. They are great barkers and that is used as an alarm. As they have herding characteristics, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a habit of nipping at any moving objects. But is they are properly socialized they may get rid of this bad habit.

Temperament

Though this breed is very small in size but it is no less than other breeds in bravery and courage. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is extremely good to their family and is very intelligent. Sometimes they are curious about strangers but that has a limit. They get well with children, other pets and dogs if trained properly. They do not have the habit of chasing other small outdoor animals like cats, squirrels etc. You should not leave them alone for a long time. Their sharp eyesight and ears make them good watchdogs. They also have a tendency of pleasing their owners and they are not at all difficult to train. They do not bark as loud as other terriers but they love barking and they are great diggers.

Training

Early socialization and training classes are required. They can be trained well as they are intelligent and obedient. They may not be comfortable with harsh methods so training should be firm and fair.

Health

They can be affected by glaucoma and PRA. They have a tendency of getting fat so they should be fed less and limited. Their average life span is 12-15 years.
