Origin

About 2000 years ago the Pekingese evolved in china. They were the imperial pet of China and were called the Chinese lions. They were only owned by the people of the Imperial Palace of china. It was so restricted that till a particular span of time no one except them could own this dog. After 1860 this breed was taken to the western countries. In 1893 this dog was first introduced in Britain and in 1909 this was introduced in United States.

General Description

The Pekingese is a very cute looking dog and it tiny like a toy about 6-9 inches in height. They have a well proportioned body and basically they look like a cartoonish character. They have a big round head and a small muzzle as if someone has punched that. The most attractive part of their face is their eyes which are very big, round and a bit hazel in colour. They look like gems. They have a black nose and two hanging ears but the fur is such beside their ears that they look like lions. The Pekingese has a small neck. It can be said that they almost they don’t have a neck and they have a broad chest which protrudes out of their shoulders. Their limbs and legs are fat but they are small, parallel and close to each other. Their back side is level and they have a long coat with long hair. They are found in black and white, red and white and many more colours.

Character

The Pekingese is a small dog and very cute. They are very brave and please don’t go by their size. They are also independent of nature and a bit stubborn. They do not like strangers much. They love human companion ship to a great level. The Pekingese love to be attended and love to stay with their families. They always love to do what they like. The most serious part with this breed is to feed them. They create problems while eating. They should also not be overfed as they have a tendency to grow fat. Kids should not tease this breed or things can get worse. It may be difficult to train this breed.

Temperament

This is a lovely breed, independent in nature but they are very loyal and devoted to their families. The Pekingese is basically a one master dog. They mostly obey one in the family. It is a very energetic breed, playful and love human companionship very much. In spite of being small in size they are brave and very protective of their masters. They love getting human attention a lot. The Pekingese is very alert and have a negative attitude towards strangers. this makes the Pekingese a great watch dog. Not at all recommended for children as they might get furious or even bite if they are teased and threatened. They may be totally aggressive towards other pets. The Pekingese should be trained properly from early age.

Training

Pekingese dogs are independent and stubborn in nature. They love to do what they like and as a result it is difficult to train these dogs. harsh training methods are not welcomed by this breed. They should be trained with consistency, fairness and firmness.

Health

They can be affected by a number of problems like heart problems, breathing troubles, dislocated kneecaps etc. Their average life span is 10-15 years.
