Origin

The Manchester terrier are of two types. They are the toy type and the standard type. In 19th century they were created in England and they were used as hunters. At the time of the rule of Queen Victoria the toy type became very famous. In the present date this breed has lost its popularity but they prove to be great companions. In 1886 this breed was introduced by the American Kennel club.

General Description

This breed is not very large in size and they are average built. They ha ea thin and sleek body. The Manchester terrier has a flat and small head and a long muzzle with a black nose at the tip. Their eyes are almond shaped and hazel and they have a long muscular neck. The Manchester terrier has a broad chest touching the shoulders and a level backside. Their limbs are sleek and straight and they have a long thin tail. They have arched toes and cropped ears folded forward.

Character

Both types of Manchester terriers are very cunning by nature. They are also intelligent. Sometimes they can be stubborn. Socialization and training classes should be started from an early age and they are really devoted and loyal to their masters. If they are not trained from childhood they can become aggressive when they grow up. They love human companionship to a great level and they like to be attended and loved by their family members. The Manchester terrier should not be left alone for a long time otherwise they can become very aggressive. They are very playful and should be engaged in activities.

Temperament

The main attraction of this breed is its extreme loyal and devoted attitude towards the family members. They have the total terrier like nature and they are also independent in nature. Generally these dogs are great to children but they are better to big children. They are not very good to other pets and this breed is not recommended for those families who keep other pets. The Manchester terrier is highly protective of their families and they can do anything to protect them. They love human companionship to a great level and should not be left alone for a lengthy period otherwise they can become destructive. Not very good to strangers but they are also not aggressive.

Training

Early training classes are required and they are very intelligent and quick learners. Harsh training methods should not be used as they would not respond to such methods. They should be trained with fairness, consistency and firmness.

Health

They suffer from heat problems and many die because of that. They can also be affected by glaucoma, femur, thyroid problems etc. their average life span is 15 years.
