Origin

Just like many other breed people do not know anything about the origin of Kuvasz. The name has been kept after the word kavas. Kavas mean guard and it is a Turkish word. This breed was basically a herding breed. They were also used for hunting. In last seventy years this breed became very popular ans now it is a great companion

General Description

The Kuvasz has a stout and strong body. It is large in shape and has a muscular body. It may have fat but it is not at all bony. They have a big head and a wide muzzle with a black nose at the tip. their ears are large pendant shaped hanging by their head. The Kuvasz has wide and fat neck and black lips. It is very heavy in its structure. They have fat and muscular limbs and legs. The Kuvasz has a large tail and rounded pawas. They have thick layer of coat on their body and they are mainly found in white colour.

Character

The Kuvasz is a large dog and it is very strong and muscular. They are very much protective of their family and territory and they are great guard dogs as well. This breed is so intelligent that they can be trained easily. They are too much devoted to their masters but sometimes they may show a bit independent nature. Generally they are good to children but still they need early socialization plus when they are with children an eye must be kept on them. Sometimes this breed is so independent that it is really difficult to train them. Grown up Kuvasz are really aggressive to other pets. They are very responsible towards their work and they are great at looking after livestock. But as I told before that if you want to keep other pets besides this breed you have to provide good training to this dog. Trainers make these dogs sleep together with the sheep and livestock so that they get friendly with them and also become caring about them.

Temperament

This breed is very much loyal and devoted to its family and they are also too protective of their family at the same time. This breed is very protective of the their own family, children in their own family, pets of their own house and so on. But they are very much aggressive towards strangers and other dogs which are not included in their family members. The Kuvasz can be aggressive towards any strange type of creatures from which it gets a smell of threat. Early socialization and training is required for the Kuvasz. They have an odd dominant nature and so they are sometimes difficult to train. They always love to work and they should be kept busy always.

Training

Generally this breed is easy to train because of its intelligence. But sometimes they are dominant and independent. They should be handled with firmness and fairness.

Health

Just like other breeds this dog may suffer from hip dysplasia, bone problems, skin allergies etc. The average life span is 9-12 years.
