The people of Japan bred this breed in such a manner that they remain tiny and they used to keep them in the cages of the birds. Sounds strange. Isn’t it? Chin is a Japanese word. It means cat.

General Description

This is a strange looking breed. They almost look like a cat and so they are called Chin in Japanese language as Chin means cat. The Japanese Chin has a round shaped head with straight triangular ears standing on the head. They have a punched muzzle just like the pug and two bid almond shaped black eyes and their eyes seem to protrude out of their eyeholes. They have a small chin and straight thin limbs and legs. TheJapanese Chinhas a short neck and a furry body. They have a fluffy tail and cat like paws. They are mainly found in black and white or brown colours.

Character

Japanese Chins are very good in nature but if they are not properly trained then they really become worse in certain situations. They are small in size, enthusiastic and bold in nature. Their webbed paws make them great swimmers. They can become good watchdogs as they are very alert and courageous. Training this breed is easy as they are highly responsive but if not trained properly they become very dominating. Japanese Chins hesitate in mixing with strangers. They should be treated with a great deal of understanding and respect by family members. If teased some of them even may bite you but not all behave like that. To prevent such types of aggressive behaviour they should be socialized and trained from early age. If proper training is provided then Japanese Chins can become as gentle, sober and loving as other breeds.

Temperament

The Japanese Chin is very intelligent, brave and impulsive. They are very much attached to human beings, very loyal to their families but take time to mix with the strangers. Japanese Chins are very much desperate in protecting their families, food and territory. They are good in nature but not always. Japanese Chins are very polite and sober to children of the family but not to them who they do not know. They are also harsh to other pets. This breed does not bark much but they prove to be excellent guard dogs. Japanese Chins don’t like to be left alone for a long period so they are best suited for joint families. Not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.

Training

Japanese Chins require a concentrated and through training on how to behave properly. They need to be socialized properly. Harsh training methods are not recommended as things may get worse due to hash approach. They are very much aware of their master and love to take the charge in his absence. In comparison to other breeds Japanese Chins can be more easily house trained.

Health

Japanese Chins may be affected by hip dysplasia like many other breeds. Thyroid problems, skin problems, knee problems and eye diseases are some of the common limitations of this breed. Their average life span is 10-12 years and average litter rate is 7-8 puppies.
