Origin

The Havanese was created in Cuba and it was generally kept by the rich people over there. After the Cuban revolution this breed totally became obsolete. Nowadays this breed has become very popular.

General Description

The Havanese is a very sweet and cute looking breed with curly fur all over. They have a round shaped and cute face which is totally covered with fur. The breed has almond shaped black eyes and a very small muzzle with a black nose at the tip. They have long ears which are invisible because of the long fur. The Havanese has a square shaped body and wide shoulders. They have wide neck and small round legs with padded paws. They are mainly found in white colour.

Character

The Havanese is a very enthusiastic breed and loves to play. They are good to children and other dogs if socialized properly. They are very much loyal and devoted to their families and prove to be great companions. This breed is very much fun loving and independent in nature. Generally they are very intelligent and that is the reason training them is easy. Some may be a bit stubborn and so not all listen to all commands. They are even great to strangers and love to be attended and loved by their owner. They always have a tendency of making the family happy and they never like to be left alone for lengthy periods.

Temperament

The Havanese is a very cute dog with a great character. They are known as the toy dog. This breed has a gentle and cute nature. It loves its family members very much and it is very playful. This breed is also the national emblem of Cuba. This dog is very intelligent in nature and loves to get attended and loved by the family. They love to be with the family always but they do not love to be left alone for long period. The Havanese is very athletic and very obedient. They prove to be a great companion. The Havanese is very much friendly to children but they are better to elder children. They are good to other animals, pets of the house and they are even excellent to the strangers that visit. This breed is a quick learner, always remains happy and has tendency of making the master happy.

Training

The Havanese is an intelligent breed but still they are sometimes stubborn and don’t listen to commands. They should not be treated harshly, but a consistent, firm as well as fair training is required.

Health

Generally this breed is a healthy one but some of them may be affected by cataracts, dry skin, PRA, hypothyroid, epilepsy and Glaucoma. Their average life span is 12-14 years.
