Origin

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is an old breed and no one knows about its origin as is its origin is lost. There is a place in Ireland and the dog is named after that. It is told that the dog has evolved from that place. This is the first breed of Ireland but this breed is also found in United States. Generally this is a hunting dog but over so many years this has become a great companion.

General Description

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is small in size and people also compare it with the Norfolk Terrier and the Corgi but it is a great breed. This breed has a round head and a friendly expression always on the face. Their eyes are large and round and they look so innocent that anybody can love them. Their ears are tiny and they are also folded a bit. Their neck is short and muscular and they have a round shaped small body. That is the reason they look like the Corgi. The Imaal terrier has a deep feathery coat all over their body and they are found in many colours like red, brindle, blue etc.

Character

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a very enthusiastic and gentle in nature. But sometimes they may become stubborn. They love human interaction to great level and love to get attended and loved by their family members. They love to stay with their family. Though this breed is quiet good to the children but they are really rough to other dogs and pets. The Imaal terrier loves the strangers as well. It is generally easy to train the breed but they are sometimes stubborn so they should be treated firmly.

Temperament

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is brave, gentle and determined by nature. They are also very intelligent and it is easy to train them as they are really quick learners. The Glen terriers always have a tendency of pleasing their masters. At some point of times the breed becomes independent and stubborn and the breed is not really recommended for novice owners. This breed is very enthusiastic and energetic. They always look for some work or exercise. They need a lot of activities daily so they are not recommended for lazy people. The Glen of Imaal Terrier loves their families very much and are very much devoted to their families. They are not at all demanding and also capable of bearing hardships. They are great barkers. If they suspect on anything they bark at that. That’s why they are very effective watch dogs. The breed is generally good to elder kids than small kids. The Glen of Imaal Terriers have a habit of chasing the small animals, cats etc so they should be trained and socialized from childhood. They do not mix with strangers well and they keep a reserved attitude in front of outsiders. Good care must be taken of this breed but it should be kept in mind that they must not be left alone with small animals. An eye should be kept on them.

Training

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is very intelligent and they are quick learners but they are sometimes independent and stubborn. Training still is not a big deal. They should be trained with firmness, fairness and consistency.

Health

Glen of Imaal Terriers are one of the most healthy breed with no problems. This breed has an average life span of 10-14 years.
