Origin
This is a breed of Germany and it was created by mixing the Great Danes with Bouvier des Flandres. The Giant Schnauzer was mainly used for herding. They are used for many puposes and they prove to be great companions. The Giant Schnauzer was mainly used as guard dogs.
General Description
The Giant Schnauzer is a large breed larger than other breeds of the same group but they look same. They have a long wide head which looks odd and a rectangle shaped muzzle with a large black nose. The fur of their muzzle looks like the beard of an old man. Their ears are small and folded and hang by the side of their head. Their body is square in shape and they have a large muscular neck. The Giant Schnauzer has rounded paws and they have long legs and limbs. They have a short coat but they have maximum fur around their neck, legs and face. They are found in colours like salt, pepper and black. White markings may be found
Character
The Giant Schnauzer is a gentle and very enthusiastic breed. It is a balanced breed and very playful in nature. They prove to be good companions and they are also excellent to children. Early socialization classes are required to make them properly socialized. Training this breed is quiet easy as they are obedient. Because of their brave and responsible personality they are good watch dogs. They are good family dogs but sometimes they may become dominant. Proper training can heal this up. The Giant Schnauzer is very protective of their family and they do not mix well with strangers. However they should not be left alone with non canine pets. The breed takes two to three years to get fully matured.
Temperament
The Giant Schnauzer is very calm and gentle in nature. They are brave, well natured and very much responsible regarding their jobs. Not at all recommended for novice owners due to their dominating attitude. They are very good to children but they should not be left alone with small pets. If properly trained then they can be well socialized. The Giant Schnauzer is a great family dog but they don’t like strangers. some of them can be even aggressive to other dogs. This breed is a bit dominant. They do not have a biting attitude but they are so confident about their size that they use that to get done whatever they want. As I told before they are only recommended for experienced dog owners.
Training
The Giant Schnauzer is a stubborn breed so early obedience classes are required. They are very intelligent and they are quick learners. They should not be treated with heavy hands as they may not respond. Training should be done with consistency, fairness and firmness.
Health
This is a healthy breed but they may have some major issues. They may be affected by hip dysplasia and cataracts. They have high tolerating power. Their average life span is 10-12 years and litter rate is 8.
