Origin
The German Wirehaired Pointer is not a very old breed. This breed evolved in Germany about 100 years back. The breed was developed in need of a hunting partner. The German Pointer was mixed with many breeds like bloodhounds, wirehaired griffons and then this breed was created as a result.
General Description
The German Wirehaired Pointer is a large in size and has great features. They have a square shaped wide head and a long muzzle with a brown nose at the tip. All around their muzzle the hair is place as wires in such a manner that it looks like the beard of the old man. The breed has pendant shaped ears hanging by their head. The wirehaired pointer has a long muscular neck and their shoulders are not too broad. Their feet is like the rabbit and they have long thin legs. Their coat is covered like wire like fur and they are found in colours like silver, white, brown etc.
Character
The German Wirehaired Pointer is an excellent breed. They are too loyal and devoted to their family members and are capable of hard work. They have a tendency of ignoring the outsiders but they love to welcome the friends and the family members. Generally they are good to other pets and dogs but they love their family members so much that they are possessive of them and that make them jealous of other pets. They are a bit independent and dominant sometimes and for that reason they may become very aggressive to other dogs. Sometimes they are stubborn but due to their intelligent nature training them is not difficult.
Temperament
The German Wirehaired Pointer loves human interaction very much and they expect attention and love from their owners. Not recommended for those who cannot devote time for their pets. They are great family dogs and have a well balanced temperament. These dogs are very energetic and intelligent at the same time. they seek a lot of exercise daily. They are sometimes stubborn and independent and they are not at all recommended for inexperienced owners.
The German Wirehaired Pointer are cool to children and other pets but sometimes due to their excessive devotion they are jealous of other pets. They do not mix well with strangers and their protective nature makes them great watch dogs.
Training
This breed is very intelligent and can be trained easily. They are stubborn and of independent nature but making them get rid of that is not a hard task. German Wirehaired Pointers should be trained with consistency, fairness and firmness. Early socialization is required.
Health
This breed suffer from certain genetic problems. They can be affected by ear infection, eye diseases, hip dysplasia etc. One of the most serious issue is skin cancer. They have an average life span of 12-14 years.
