Origin

In the 19th century the hunters of Germany bred this dog and this breed had great hunting abilities and smelling power. They mixed various breeds like the Old Spanish Pointer, the Foxhound, the English Pointer etc. These are mainly referred as the gundogs and they are flexible both in land and in water.

General Description

This breed has a medium shaped body and they are not large in size. The German Shorthaired Pointers always have an intelligent expression on their face. They have a medium shaped head which is flat at the top and a square shaped muzzle with a livery nose on the tip. Their head is a bit round shaped with a kind of division in the middle. It has round hazel eyes and pendant shaped ears hanging by their head. They have a sloaping down neck and their back portion is a bit sloaping towards their tail. The German Shorthaired Pointer has a wide chest touching the elbows and a short docked tail. They have thin limbs and legs with arched toes. This breed has a short coat which is mainly found in liver colour and also white spots may be present.

Character

The German Shorthaired Pointer is enthusiastic and intelligent by nature. They are also very cheerful. They have a tendency to please the family members they live with. They are excellent to children and they love human interaction to a great level. If properly socialized they prove to be great companions. Male dogs are very aggressive and dominant than females of this breed . Generally they are very energetic but this may vary between different. In spite of being hunting dogs they are cool to other small animals. The short haired pointer is a great barker and they do not mix with strangers well.

Temperament

The German Shorthaired Pointer is very energetic and have a tendency to please always. They are very friendly by nature and are very good to children. If properly socialized they are also cool to other pets and small animals like cats etc. The German Shorthaired Pointers are great barkers and they are very devoted to their family. They are very protective of their family and love human interaction to a great level. They love to stay with their family.

Training

The German Shorthaired Pointer can be trained well. At some point of times they are a bit stubborn and so they should be trained firmly. Heavy methods are not recommended but they should be trained consistently, firmly and fairly.

Health

Generally the German Shorthaired Pointer is healthy than others. Some of them may be affected by epilepsy, hermaphrodism and lymphedema. Some may even suffer from entropion, pannus, OCD, CHD, gastric problems etc. Their average life span is 12-15 years and average litter rate is 5.
