Origin
The Flat Coated Retriever was created in the 1800 century and it was the mix of the Labrador, Irish Setter and the water dog. Some people even say that collie also plays a role in the mix if this breed. They are great swimmers and prove to be great companions. The Flat Coated Retriever is so similar to Labrador and golden retriever that it is often confused with those. They are mainly used as hunter, guard dogs and they are very athletic and obedient in nature. If trained properly then they can become expert in sports.
General Description
The Flat Coated Retriever is a strong breed and has a muscular body but they are not bulky at all. They have an athletic appearance. They have a wide and round head with hazel eyes. They have a long sleek muzzle which has a black nose at the tip. Their ears are not large but they are pendant shaped and they lay flat by their head. They have a long feathery tail which is curved a bit at the tip. They have a wide chest which touches the shoulders. The Flat Coated Retriever has a silky coat but they have most fur around their neck, legs and tail. They are mainly found in liver or black colour.
Character
Flat Coated Retrievers are very athletic and strong built. They are very intelligent and obedient in nature. It is a very good breed and it is devoted and loyal to its family. The Flat Coated Retriever loves human companionship to a great extent and also like to get attended by people. Not at all recommended for micro families. They love to be surrounded by many people and love to be a part of the family. This breed always stays cheerful and is very humorous. They are great entertainers. The Flat Coated Retriever has a good temperament and they are also obedient by nature but they are not that good to other dogs. They require training from an early age.
Temperament
The Flat Coated Retriever have a well temperament and is very cheerful. They have a very gentle personality and are excellent to children. They are also good to strangers and other pets if they are properly socialized from childhood. The breed is very intelligent and always love to please their masters. They love appreciation very much. This breed is very fond of human companion ship and love to stay with the family. They should not be left alone for long periods as they would get destructive in such situations. The Flat Coated Retriever may not be suitable for their energy level. As they are highly energetic and love to play always they kids may get knocked down.
Training
This breed is very obedient and intelligent. As a student it is the best as per the trainers. They always love to learn new things. They are very active and they always have a tendency to please the trainer.
Health
This breed may be affected by cancer, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, PRA etc. Their average life span is 10 years.
