Origin

The English Toy Spaniel originated in England and it was named after the King Charles. In north America the King Charles spaniel is known as the Toy Spaniel. In the 1800 century this breed was bred with dogs with short nose.

General Description

The English Toy Spaniel is the smallest among the spaniels. They are stout, square shaped but not bulky. Their head is like a flat box. They have a very short muzzle, almost it looks like no muzzle and their nose is large and black like the pug. The Toy Spaniel has big nostrils. They have undershot teeth and large sized brown eyes. Their ears are large in size and look like ponytails. The Toy Spaniel has sharp teeth enough for a scissor bite. They have feathery and silky coat and they are found in colours like black and red, black and tan etc.

Character

The English Toy Spaniel is very athletic, hardy, strong and can bear hardships. It is a great companion and a good worker. They love human companionship and are excellent to children and good with other pets. It is basically a hunting dog it is a great swimmer. They are loyal to their masters and they are also protective of their families.

Temperament

The English Toy Spaniel is very intelligent, brave and impulsive. They are very much attached to human beings, very loyal to their families but take time to mix with the strangers. English Toy Spanieles are very much desperate in protecting their families, food and territory. They are good in nature but not always. English Toy Spanieles are very polite and sober to children of the family but not to them who they do not know. They are not harsh to other pets. This breed does not bark much but they prove to be excellent hunting dogs. They don’t like to be left alone for a long period so they are best suited for joint families. Not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.

Training

The English Toy Spanieles are very athletic and obedient so they perform well in their training classes. They are softer in nature than other spaniels so harsh training methods are not recommended. Consistent and fair training is required. They should be motivated always.

Health

The English Toy Spaniel should be brushed regularly for daily shedding. It should be properly bathed when needed. Shampoos can be used. It is very necessary to keep the ears and eyes of the breed clean. This breed has a bad habit of snoring as their face is short. Not at all recommended for hot weather. English Toy Spaniel may be affected by heart disease, ear infections, eye problems, and respiratory problems. Extreme weather conditions are not suitable for this breed. It just cannot take extreme heat or extreme cold. This breed can be affected by hip dysplasia. They are also affected by heart and skin diseases. Average life span is 14-15 years and litter rate is 5-7.
