Origin

In the 1500 century this breed evolved in France and this was the mix of the Spanish pointer and the French pointer. The English Setter was brought to Britain and named by Sir Edward Laverack. In 1800 century he created the breed from French dogs. They were used as the hunting dogs first by Lewellin. This breed is mainly used for hunting purposes and also used to perform in shows.

General Description

The English Setter is very good looking, beautiful and slim in structure. They have a thin chest and a long square shaped head. The muzzle is square shaped and not as long as their head. They have a large black nose on the tip of muzzle and big pendant shaped ears. Their eyes are sometimes also hazel in colour. This breed has a tapered tail and at the tip of the tail it has long fur. His breed has a long and silky coat. They are found in many colours like white with blue, lemon, brown and also found in orange. It has short coat all over their body but they have long hair on their chest, legs and tail.

Character

The English Setter has a very adoring and gentle nature. This breed is sometimes very independent of nature and so they should be handled firmly. They are basically one master dog. If they are properly trained and socialized they can become a great companion. These dogs love to work and they behave the best when they are engaged in work. The English Setter is very energetic and enthusiastic. They are great hunting dogs. They always love human companionship and love to be a part of the family. They should not be left alone for a long period as they can become destructive in such situations. They can be kept by all. They are good for experienced as well as novice owners.

Temperament

This breed is a very lively, playful, energetic and cheerful breed. They have a very sweet outlook. If trained properly they prove to be great companions and they love human companionship to a great extent. They always love to be a part of the family and should not be neglected. These are not lazy dogs and they always love to be engaged in work. The English Setter is very good to children and other pets. They are also cool with strangers and they look like really socialized. They love to spend ample of time with their families and they are also protective. Sometimes they can be stubborn but they are easy to train as they are quick learners.

Training

It is not that easy to train this breed as they are a bit independent on nature and they may also be stubborn in nature. They should not be trained harshly. Consistent training should be done.

Health

This breed is generally healthy but they have a tendency of getting fat so they should be fed less. They can also be affected by hip dysplasia. They have an average life span of 10-15 years.
