Origin
The Clumber Spaniel was created in England in the 14th century. It is the biggest spaniel. The British monarchs loved them because of their sober and courtly attitude. They are great hunters and swimmers. They have good smelling power and great stamina. The Clumber Spaniel is also capable of bearing hardships. This breed was first introduced in the 19th century.
General Description
This breed is the biggest among the spaniels. They have a strong body and it is very stout and bulky. They have a broad furry neck and their shoulders are wide and strong. The Clumber Spaniel has strong muscular limbs and big jaws. They have wide chest which touches the shoulders. They have a square nig head with a flat top. The Clumber Spaniel has a broad muzzle with a big brown nose at the tip. They have small amber coloured eyes and flat pendant shaped ears which hang by their head. This breed has a thick feathery coat white in colour and some may also have orange or lemon markings on its body. They also have a long docked tail.
Character
Clumber Spaniels are cool and majestic by nature and very handsome. This breed is very gentle, good natured and prove to be excellent companions. They are very sweet tempered and loyal to their families. They are not great hunters but they love to play and very good behaved. They are very good to children and other pets. This breed cannot mix with strangers very well. They are neither timid nor aggressive. They have an excellent memory and they do not respond to harsh treatment .
Temperament
The Clumber Spaniel are loyal, enthusiastic, restless but obedient at the same time. They are good to children and other pets but sometimes they may become harsh to animals or dogs they do not know. This breed is good for household and are also very good to strangers if properly introduced. Sometimes they may become one master dog. They may listen to only one person in the family. They are great watch dogs and bark too much. Their extreme alertness and protectiveness make them tremendous watch dogs. They love to get attention and care from other people. Things may get worse if they are teased.
Training
These dogs are very intelligent, have a brilliant memory and are always determined to please their trainer. Training is very easy but they may not respond to harsh methods. So training should be done with fairness.
Health
This breed may be affected by panosteitis. They are large in size and that’s why they can also be affected by hip dysplasia, cataracts, dry eyes, allergies, entropion etc. Their life span varies form 10-12 years.
