Origin

Many people say that Brittany Spaniel is a mixed breed of Orange and white setter and this is a totally unidentified. This dog was first found in Brittany in 1896. This is generally a hunting breed. This breed has been properly recognised from 1938. The Brittany spaniel is generally called Brittany in United States.

General Description

This breed is very popular for hunting. They are medium sized and not at all stout and bulky. They are athletic and love to roam about. They have round medium shaped skulls and their muzzle is small and thin. Their nose is not always black but they depend on the colour of their coat. The colour of their eye is amber or hazel. They have small ears triangular in shape and lying flat by their head. They have a docked and short tail. They have a short feathery coat found in a number of colours like white, orange, liver and white etc.

Character

This is a very intelligent breed and good at hunting. The Brittany is very gentle and obedient in nature. They always remain eager to please their master. This breed is very alert and playful. They are independent in nature. If the Brittany gets the proper training then they are really good to children and other pets. They are very fond of water. It is a friendly breed and prove to be good companions. They are very protective of their family. Very enthusiastic and love to work.

Temperament

It is a very loyal, intelligent and gentle breed. It is playful and very obedient by nature. That is the reason they are trained easily. This breed is so good that they are totally recommended for novice dog owners. The Brittany is very fond of human interaction and if they are left alone for a long time thy may become bored and may behave in a destructive manner. They are very sensitive and always wants to please people. the love to become a part of the family. The Brittany is very smooth to children and other animals provided they are given early socialization classes. They are good for outsiders and they love their family very much. The Brittany is independent in nature and very protective of their family. These are great watch dogs. This breed loves to bark and their bark is like an alarm. Some of these dogs are excessive timid and shy.

Training

This breed is very intelligent and obedient so it is easy to train them. They are bored very easily so training should be full of interaction. They are timid so harsh training methods should not be followed. Socialization classes should start from an early age. Consistent, firm and balanced training should be provided.

Health

This breed is generally a healthy breed compared to others. Some are affected by hip dysplasia and seizures. Average life is 10-12 years and litter rate is 6.
