Origin
This breed originated in south America and this is known as an official breed of south Carolina. They are famous for hunting. In the 20th century a brown spaniel was seen roaming about around a church of south Carolina. The man who saw this was Alexander White. He was amazed to see the dog’s hunting power. He gave the dog to his hunter friend L. Whitaker Boykin. It was mixed with certain breeds and the Boykin Spaniel was created. It is great hunter of birds.
General Description
This is a hunting dog. It is strong and compact and has a muscular structure. They look like a spaniel. They have a broad head and a square shaped muzzle. TheBoykin Spaniel has a medium sized body and light eyes. They have long ears lying flat by their face and is covered with curly hair. They have docked tails and many people say that they look like the cocker spaniel. The main difference between the cocker spaniel and the Boykin Spaniel is the size. The first one is smaller than the second one. They have curly hair all over their body and they are found in black and brown colour.
Character
This breed is very athletic, hardy, strong and can bear hardships. It is a great companion and a good worker. They love human companionship and are excellent to children and good with other pets. It is basically a hunting dog it is a great swimmer. They are loyal to their masters and they are also protective of their families.
Temperament
This breed is very intelligent, brave and impulsive. They are very much attached to human beings, very loyal to their families but take time to mix with the strangers.Boykin Spaniels are very much desperate in protecting their families, food and territory. They are good in nature but not always. Boykin Spaniels are very polite and sober to children of the family but not to them who they do not know. They are not harsh to other pets. This breed does not bark much but they prove to be excellent hunting dogs. They don’t like to be left alone for a long period so they are best suited for joint families. Not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.
Training
The Boykin Spaniels are very athletic and obedient so they perform well in their training classes. They are softer in nature than other spaniels so harsh training methods are not recommended. Consistent and fair training is required. They should be motivated always.
Health
This breed can be affected by hip dysplasia and eye problems. They are also affected by heart and skin diseases. Average life span is 14-15 years and litter rate is 5-7.
