Origin
The boxer evolved in Germany in the 19th century. This breed was named like this because they moved their front paws in a peculiar manner. They were mainly used for rescue by the police and military. Bullenbeiszer and Barebeiszer are the ancestors of the boxer. This breed was mixed with the Mastiff and the Bulldog. These dogs were also used for hunting and pulling carts. Later the ancestors of this breed was also used for herding. They were also used in circus and theatres for performing.
General Description
The boxer has a strong, broad, square shaped and muscular body. They have straight boned limbs and a round muscular neck. They have a docked tail and a very broad chest that it touches the elbows and also pushes out of both the elbows. It has triangular ears lying flat by its head. Their upper jaws are so long that they hang over their lower jaws and when their mouth is closed their teeth and tongue is not visible. The Boxer has wide nostrils and a glossy short coat. They are found in many colours fawn, brindle, red, white etc. They may have some white marks in their mouth and chest.
Character
The boxer is a strong, powerful and enthusiastic breed. They are extremely loyal to their masters. They are very energetic and have a proud appearance. Theboxer is a very good natured and playful breed. They prove to be great companions. It is easy to train them because of their intelligence and eagerness to learn. They become good family members and they are excellent to children. They also get well with other pets. Highly protective of their family and they also warmly welcome the visitors. It is a good watch dog. They have a tendency to jump on people but if proper training is provided then they would not do so.
Temperament
The boxer is a patient and very pleasant breed. They are highly energetic, playful and strong. They always keep a proud appearance. Very intelligent breed and that’s why they are easy to train. They are very good to children and also good to other pets. They also like visitors. They prove to be very loyal and good family members. Sometimes they are dominant. The boxers are very protective of their families. Early socialization classes are required. They have tendency of using their front paws in a strange manner with everything and that’s why they are called boxer as I told before. They love human interaction and don’t love to be left alone for a long time. They are not at all suited for micro families. They like to be the leaders and sometimes they are dominant over dogs which belong to the same sex. But overall this is a nice breed.
Training
The boxer is an intelligent breed and a quick learner. The owner should be really dominant. This is really necessary for managing and controlling them. Harsh training methods should not be applied. Training should be consistent, firm and fair.
Health
The Boxer may be affected by cardiomyopathy, epilepsy, hip dysplasia etc. They may also develop tumours and allergies. Their average life span is 11-14 and average litter rate is 6.
