Origin
The Bouvier Des Flandres has a doubtful origin. It is a franco Belgian breed. Some people say that the breed was the result of the mix of the Griffon and the Beauceron. This breed was generally used as a herding dog. During the 1st world war the dog was used for rescue and carrying messages. The breed became obsolete after a certain point of time. After the world war ended the breed was again bred in Belgium. These dogs are also used for carting, police and military works, guides etc.
General Description
The Bouvier Des Flandres is a large and powerful breed. They have a broad and square shaped body and deep wide chest which touches the shoulders. They have straight muscular limbs. The Bouvier Des Flandres has large head with a broad muzzle. Their nose is big and black. They have dark eyes and sharp teeth. They have straight erect ears and a docked tail. The Bouvier Des Flandres has a shaggy coat. It is rough in texture. They are mainly found in colours like black, grey, brindle etc. They are never found in white. Their rough coat always save them from abnormal weather conditions.
Character
The Bouvier Des Flandres is a gentle and very enthusiastic breed. It is a balanced breed and very playful in nature. They prove to be good companions and they are also excellent to children. Early socialization classes are required to make them properly socialized. Training this breed is quiet easy as they are obedient. Because of their brave and responsible personality they are good watch dogs. They are good family dogs but sometimes they may become dominant. Proper training can heal this up. The Bouvier Des Flandres is very protective of their family and they do not mix well with strangers. However they should not be left alone with non canine pets. The breed takes two to three years to get fully matured.
Temperament
The Bouvier Des Flandres is very calm and gentle in nature. They are brave, well natured and very much responsible regarding their jobs. Not at all recommended for novice owners due to their dominating attitude. They are very good to children but they should not be left alone with small pets. If properly trained then they can be well socialized. The Bouvier Des Flandres is a great family dog but they don’t like strangers. some of them can be even aggressive to other dogs. This breed is a bit dominant. They do not have a biting attitude but they are so confident about their size that they use that to get done whatever they want. As I told before they are only recommended for experienced dog owners.
Training
This is a stubborn breed so early obedience classes are required. They are very intelligent and they are quick learners.
Health
The Bouvier Des Flandres is a healthy breed but they may have some major issues. They may be affected by hip dysplasia and cataracts. They have high tolerating power. Their average life span is 10-12 years and litter rate is 8.
