Origin

The Boston terrier was created in Boston. This breed is one of the non sporting breed and it was bred in America. The main purpose breeding this dog was dog fight. Long time ago this breed was large in size. They were actually a mix of English bulldog and English white terrier. But now this has become obsolete. In the middle of 18th centuries rich people in Boston started breeding these dogs.

General Description

The Boston terrier is a very small sized breed. They have a stout and muscular body. They have broad and short muzzle with large almond shaped eyes. Their eyes are far set. The Boston terriers have a black flat nose which seems like being punched. They have straight standing triangular ears and a muscular neck. They have a flat head and straight limbs. They have a glossy thin coat which is found in many colours like brindle and white, black and white etc.

Character

The Boston terrier is small in size. They are stout but not at all delicate. They are very gentle in nature and they are also called the gentlemen of America. They are very cheerful and love to play. This breed is very graceful, strong and determined. The Boston terrier was generally created for dog fights. This is an extremely intelligent breed and very good mannered. If they smell threat then they would bark a lot and they are also very good watchdogs. The Boston Terriers are well with children and strangers. They are a great part of the family are very dominating towards other dogs. They are also good to non canine pets.

Temperament

The Boston terrier is very intelligent, have a great deal of enthusiasm and very devoted and loyal to their masters animated with a great sense of humour. They love interaction of human beings and cherish being a part of the family. They are excellent to elder children of the family and also good to non canine pets. But male Boston terriers may fight with other dogs. This breed is very sensitive and would prefer to be treated with softness. It is a very good mannered and good natured dog. This dog is always very keen to please everybody. Highly recommended for novice dog owners and homes with children and other pets.

Training

The Boston Terriers are quick learners. Harsh training methods are not recommended. As they are sensitive they should be treated with care and patience.

Health

Because of the short muzzle this breed is prone to breathing problems in bad weathers. They have snoring habits. The Boston terriers can be affected by heart and skin tumors. The dogs not bred properly can be affected by bone defects and brain growth which may lead to retardation. These dogs have a life span of more than 15 years and average litter rate is 3-4.
