Bloodhound is one of the oldest breed in this world. The origin of this breed is not known by anyone. It was polished by the monks of Belgium. The Normans brought the bloodhounds to England and united states. It is a hunter dog and it hunts by the scent of its prey. It may get diverted from everything once it gets a scent. This breed is a great companion and it is generally used for tracking criminals, lost children etc. Bloodhounds are the ancestors of many other breeds like American CoonHounds, Swiss Jura Hounds, Brazilian Fila Brasileiro etc.
General Description
The bloodhound is a large breed. It has a large strong body and as it is a hound it is also powerful. The skin all over the face of the bloodhound, their jaws hangs like an old man. This gives the BloodHound a sad expression. It has a muscled neck but the skin all over is wrinkled like an aged. They have strong and broad shoulders. They have straight boned limbs and long sensitive ears. It has a flat and broad skull which it always keeps raised. The eyes of the bloodhound are totally like an old man. It seems that they have drowned deep in the sockets. They are round in shape and dark in colour. The bloodhound has a long tail which is a bit curved. This breed has a thin and rough coat. It is found in tanned black, tanned tawny or tanned liver colour.
Character
The bloodhound is very shy and calm in nature. This breed never mixes well with strangers but at the same time they are never aggressive. The bloodhounds are difficult to train as they listen only to one. This breed is always keen to please its master. They do not bark much as other hounds. It is a very kind, loving, gentle and it has a balanced temper. They are very well mannered and very good to children. Bloodhound is an excellent family dog. They love to get attention from elders as well as children. They are very energetic and loves a lot of exercise. Early training classes are required as they are independent in nature. This breed has a bad habit of not obeying order. They do what they think is right. They take their own decisions. If they are provided proper training they become manageable by the age of 2. They are dominant on other dogs and dogs belonging to the same sex. As their sniffing power is breat they should always be kept in a protected area.
Temperament
Bloodhounds are very gentle, sweet and well behaved in nature. They are a bit independent. They do obey orders of all but they may listen to only one master. They do what they think is right. But it can be managed if early training classes are provided. They are very dominating over other dogs and the blood hounds should not be left alone with small species. This breed is very good to children but suspicious about strangers. it has a giant size and powerful appearance.
Training
This breed is extremely intelligent and very much eager to learn things. But it is also stubborn at the same time so harsh training methods are not recommended. Consistent training is required. The bloodhounds get trained slowly but if they are trained properly then they would prove to be great dogs.
