Origin

In the 1940s Red Star which was an army kennel bred this specie for its personal requirements. They targeted at producing a hard and strong dog with an active personality and capable of working hard. The black Russian terrier was created in such manner that they were capable of adjusting in changing climates. Twenty different dogs were mixed to create this breed.

General Description

The black Russian terrier is an average large sized breed and strong and hard built. They are also very powerful. They have a broad shaper head and a square body. This breed is also decorated with a mustache and beard. The black Russian terrier has a large black nose. They have broad lips and powerful jaws. Theblack Russian terrier has sharp teeth enough for a scissor bit and almond shaped black eyes. Their ears are triangular in shape and they hang by their face. Their neck is thick and muscular and they have a levelled body but that does not look flat. The Russian terrier has straight boned limbs and broad shoulders. They have a cropped tail and a thick coat of black fur all over their body that looks like a jacket.

Character

The black Russian terriers are very intelligent, strong and brave. They are also very loyal and self confident in nature. They are very protective of their territory and they have a equalized temperament. Black Russian terriers prove to be a great companion and family member. Due to their intelligence they can be trained well. This breed can easily join you in all your activities such as biking, swimming, fishing etc. They suspect strangers and take high protective measures against them. The Russian dogs are very sensitive and playful in nature and they are also very eager to learn. They are good to children and other small animals but they should not be left with large sized dogs. They expect a lot of work from their owners. Early training classes are required. If proper training is provided then they can prove to be great family dogs.

Temperament

The black Russian terrier is a large breed with a balanced temperament and very lively in nature. They take great protective measures against strangers and they always have a defensive attitude. These dogs are physically strong, brave and very alert. If proper socialization classes are provided then they would also be good to children and other pets. They are very eager and funny in nature. This dog is very curious about everything and has a habit of exploring. Like other terrier breeds they are also a bit stubborn. They are good to children and other dogs but they may not be good to large species. The Russian terriers expect a lot of attention from their owners. Their protective attitude makes them good watchdogs and they never mix well with strangers.

Training

The black Russian terrier dogs are very easily trained. They get trained very fast as they are over average learners.

Health

The black Russian terrier can be affected by hip dysplasia and otitis. Their average life span is 10-12 years and litter rate is 6-12.
