Origin

This is a breed from America and came into existence during the 17th century. The Black and Tan Coonhound is a great hunter wild boar, bear, cougar etc. They hunt by smelling their prey. They are capable of hunting in any weather. It was recognized amongst all Coonhounds by American Kennel Club in 1945. This breed was created by mixing the Talbot hound, blood Hound and Foxhound. But it was mainly used for hunting purposes.

General Description

The Black and Tan Coonhound has a large muscular body. It is broad and strong built. They have straight boned limbs and strong paws. Black and Tan Coonhounds have a wide chest touching their elbows. They have a flat head and almond shaped eyes. Their eyes are brown in colour. This breed has a black nose and hanging lips. They have large ears hanging by their head and they have a short shiny and black coat.

Character

The Black and Tan Coonhound is large, strong and capable of hard work. They have a unique tone which can be easily identified by their owners. Black and Tan Coonhounds have a great stamina and courage. They are great sniffer dogs.

Temperament

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a very intelligent and obedient breed. Very much loyal to their families and at the same time eager and dedicated to their tasks. This breed is very friendly and has a good nature. Recommended for homes with older children. They are good to other dogs but not at all recommended for homes which have cats and small species. Don’t like to be left alone for a long time. If such happens they may bark excessively. They do not properly mix with the strangers but they are not aggressive towards them. Some of them may also be friendly to strangers. The Black and Tan Coonhound has a lively and curious nature. They are easy to deal with. This is a breed with a very curious nature and that is the reason it should be kept in proper watch because this habit may lead it to problems at certain point of times. They love to work and have a great sniffing power. If they are allowed they also love to play. This breed is good to children and other pets but at time they may be dominant on other dogs. They are recommended for experienced dog owners.

Training

The Black and Tan Coonhound requires early obedience classes. Sometimes they behave in an independent and stubborn manner. Harsh training methods should not be applied. They should be trained with firmness, politeness and patience.

Health

The Black and Tan Coonhound is generally a healthy breed in comparison to others. They may be affected by some similar diseases just as other breeds like hip dysplasia. They should not be overfed as they have a tendency of growing fat. Their average lifespan is 10-12 years and average litter rate is 7-8 puppies.
