Origin

The Berger Picard is one of the oldest French herding dogs. This originated in 19th century in Northern France. This breed was generally used for herding purposes and this breed almost got obsolete at the time of world war I and II. Now gradually this breed is again getting revived but still there are only 100 Berger Picards in USA and Canada. This breed first came in Picardy. It was named after the Picardie region in Northern France.

General Description

This is a medium sized breed. It has a well muscled strong body and it is longer than it is tall. The Berger Picard has triangular shaped ears which stand erect over their head. They have thick eyebrows and a long tail slightly curved at the end. It’s tail is quiet long and it almost reaches the ground. The Berger Picard has a coat covered all over by thick fur and it is found in many colours like blue-grey, red-grey, grey-black, dark, fawn etc. There may be some white colour at the feet.

Character

The Berger Picard has a rough but gentle appearance at the same time. Its temperament may have many frequent variations. A stable home environment should be provided by the owners in order to raise this breed. This breed has a habit of staying a the member of the family being one of them so it should not be left alone for extended periods in a kennel or somewhere else as that may lead to worse situations. Obedience and socialization classes should be started from early age. They are very good to children and other pets. Due to their hunting abilities they love to bark. The Berger Picard is very intelligent breed but also stubborn at the same time but they can learn very well if wish to do so. Consistent training should be provided and commands should be given in a cheerful manner and not roughly. This breed is very loyal to their family. They are good natured, energetic and alert. They are good herding dogs and also good farm guard at the same time.

Temperament

The Berger Picard is not recommended for novice dog owners. It is a very loyal good natured breed but they may be tempered sometimes. They are very well behaved to children and other pets. The Berger Picard is god guard dog due to its barking ability and alert nature. They are very hard working and energetic. But if left alone for a long time then things may get worse. This breed is very good at looking after the cattle and they are very good farm guard. They are obedient and intelligent but sometimes they behave in a stubborn manner. Consistent training should be given.

Training

Early socialization is required. Berger Picards are very intelligent and obedient to learn anything fast. But if rough methods are used then the training may become worse. This breed are capable of learning things fast if they wish to do so. Training must be done with patience, firmness and fairness.

Health

This breed is prone to eye infections at an early age due to some dust going to their eyes. They may be affected by hip dysplasia but chances are less as their weight is less. But real c are should be taken of their eyes. They live up to 13-14 years.
