Origin

There are four types of Belgian sheep dogs. The Belgian Malinois is one of them. This breed was named after the Belgium city Malines. It was recognized as a separate breed in 1959. They are quiet rare in United states but they are very popular in Belgium. It is a very good working breed and if it is properly trained it can prove to be an excellent family dog. They have great abilities in hunting, tracking, detection, herding etc.

General Description

The body of the Belgian Malinois is square shaped and muscular. They are very athletic and they always keep their head raised in a proud manner. Their length is same as the length of their tail. They have straight boned limbs and cat like feet. The Belgian Malinois has flat skull and a pointed mouth. They have high erect ears that stand straight over their head. They have a black n ose and sharp teeth enough for a scissor bite. Their eyes are small almond shaped and dark in colour. The Belgian Malinois have a long tail that almost reaches the ground and they have a short haired coat which found in red or mahogany colour. Their neck fur is longer than the hair in their body.

Character

They are very protective strong and have great working power. If properly trained they can be very obedient and good family pets. The Belgian Malinois is a good watch dog and loyal in nature. They should not be neglected or left alone as they can become destructive in such situations. They are very protective of their family and territory. Proper socialization should be given from an early age. They are very gentle and good to children and sometimes they are dominant toward other dogs. But if they are properly trained then they also get along with other pets. These dogs are well known for their bravery.

Temperament

The Belgian Malinois is very intelligent specie and also good to children and other dogs if properly socialized. This is an obedient breed, a great working dog and always eager to please its master. The Belgian Malinois is very responsive and responsible in nature but sometimes they can become playful and mischievous. These dogs are attentive but sometimes they behave in a stubborn manner for which they are recommended for experienced dog owners. Sometimes they become protective of their territory but they are good to children and if properly socialized they are also good to other pets. They must be given a lot of attention other they may become destructive.

Training

The Belgian Malinois is easy to train as they are intelligent, hard working and always have a tendency to please. If proper training is provided then they are really good. But if not handled properly then it would become really difficult to manage this breed.

Health

They are a healthy breed but they may be prone to skin allergies, eye problems, hip and elbow dysplasia etc. Their average life span is 12-14 years and their average litter rate is 6-10 puppies.
