Origin
The bearded collie is a medium sized athletic dog which was used to look after the cattle. It is the ancestor of the old English sheep dog. The bearded collieoriginated in Scotland and for many years this breed was used to look after the livestock. They were trained in such a manner that they had the ability to take decisions without any guidance. The bearded collie vanished in the 20th century but was again saved in 1944. The bearded collie is a rare breed till today but their popularity is growing.
General Description
The bearded collie is a medium sized dogs and it has an athletic body with a number of herding capabilities. The breed is bulky and strong built and it has a large head. It has large beautiful eyes the colour of which matches the body colour of the breed that is sometimes slate grey, dark brown, amber, amber hazel etc.Bearded collies have triangular large ears lying flat by their head. They have a shaggy tail which hangs low but if the dog is excited it may get a curve. They have large sharp teeth and a shaggy coat. Their total body is covered by shaggy fur. Even if their eyes are also covered. They have a soft undercoat and they may be found in many colours.
Character
The bearded collie is an active and hard working breed. This has a lot of strength and forms a great companion. They are capable of all hardships. They have a self confidence and are never shy and aggressive. This breed is very dashing, reliable and authentic. They are well suited for being a good family dog and at the same time they can also be a good worker. The bearded collie should never be left without any work. This breed can also be easily trained.
Temperament
This is a very enthusiastic and loving breed. Family fun and tasks to do are very much important for the bearded collie. This breed is very sweet and easy to deal with but at the same time they are also bold and rowdy. They are extremely good with children and other pets. The bearded collie do not love to be left alone for a long period of time. Due to their herding nature they may try to do the same activities with everyone in the house or anything that is in motion. This breed is not a great barker but when someone visits then they will work as an alarm.
Training
The bearded collies are very independent in nature and they think that whatever they know is perfect. This breed is generally easily trainable. Obedience classes are very necessary as they are of independent nature. Firm, fair and consistent methods of training should be applied.
Health
Just as many other breeds the bearded collies are also affected by hip dysplasia. There thick coats can be affected by parasites and ticks. Proper care should be taken. They live up to 14-15 years and their average litter rate is 7.
