The beagle was used for hunting purposes and it is a scent hunter so it hunts with the help of sniffing. Early obedience classes are very necessary. The beagleevolved as mixed breed of the harrier and many other hounds in England. Due to their sniffing capability they are also use amongst the narcotic detection dogs.
General Description
The beagle is square shaped and strongly build. It is smaller in comparison to other hounds. They have a broad skull, black nose and hazel eyes. Many people say beagle is same as the English foxhound. They have long, flat and wide ears which hang by their head and they have round and strong feet. They have a long tail slightly curved at the tip. They have a shiny short coat that exists in multiple colours, lemon and white, orange and white, red and white etc.
Character
The beagle is an energetic breed. They are full of energy and are great family dogs. They do very well with the children. They are also very lively and active by nature provided they are given proper socialization classes. This breed is neither aggressive nor timid. At some point of times they may be very mischievous so proper precautions are necessary. But generally this is a very fun loving breed. Overall they are excellent pets because of their loving nature. They are warm towards every one due to their cheerful behaviour. The beagles are very good to other pets and dogs and they are also very energetic.
Temperament
Overall the beagle is a great breed and it is a wonderful companion. It can adapt to various lifestyles and environments and it is always keen to please everyone. It should be given proper training as sometimes the beagles looses attention on what it is doing and focus on something else that has drawn its attention. They are excellent to children and other pets. The beagles are playful and sociable dogs and that’s why they are highly recommended for inexperienced dog owners.
Training
The beagle is very intelligent and always keen to please. They can be a good student of yours while training classes. Sometimes they lose interest on the stiff they are engaged in due to some other stuff which has drawn their attention. Proper training classes are required because if not trained properly then the beagle can be very disobedient. Consistent, firm and gentle handling is required while training.
Health
Some beagles are affected by heart problems, thyroid problems, hip dysplasia, eye problems, back problems and epilepsy. Sometimes they are also affected by dwarfism due to which their front legs become bent. Their average life span is 12-15 years and litter rate is 7. While purchasing your beagle puppy just check that the parents of the puppy must have CERF and OFA certificates.
