Origin

The basenji generally originated in Africa and it was prepared to hunt. They are basically sight hunters and they hunt with the help of eyesight. This breed has a sharp hunting instinct and they love to chase creatures may be that is an animal or a car. They are not great barkers. Same creatures as basenji are found in Egyptian paintings and tombs which are about 5000 years ago. This breed was brought to Europe in the year of 1934. Later they were groomed by English breeder and sent to all over the world. The basenji was also used as forest guide.

General Description

The basenji is small in size and very athletic. It looks unique. Their style of movement is like a horse. The basenji has long straight limbs, muscular thighs and tall erect ears standing straight over their head. They have a tail which is totally curled on their back. This breed has a flat head with almond shape eyes and wrinkled forehead. They have thin coat and that exists in number of colours like black, copper, black and tan etc.

Character

This is a very suspicious breed and it remains aloof of strangers. They are very intelligent but too independent at the same time. The basenji is very loud, energetic, playful and are good for families. They are very curious about everything. They respond to training well. They do not mix well with the strangers because of their suspicious nature but they are very good to their families and children. Generally basenjis are recommended to families with older children as these dogs are full of energy and they are great climbers. They always have a tendency of pleasing their owners and are restless and swift. They love teasing their owners by playing with them.

Temperament

The basenji is very curious, alert and fun loving dog. It is not recommended for novice dog owners. If left alone for long periods things may get worse as the breed may become destructive. This is a patient breed. They are very good and loving to children but sometime they have a tendency of fighting with other dogs. For this reason they should be socialized properly.

Training

The basenji should be trained at an early age as if it is late then things may go out of reach. This is a very energetic and curious breed so obedience classes are very important. The basenji should not be trained with same stuffs again and again as they have a tendency of getting bored.

Health

This breed may be affected by Fanconi’s syndrome. This is a type of kidney problem. It is highly recommended that a basenji should be immediately treated if it is affected by such kidney disease. They may also be affected by eye problems and intestinal problems. The average life span is 10-12 years and average litter rate is 4-6 puppies.
