Origin
The American Water Spaniel has been used for hunting since 18th century. They were developed in USA and a very rare breed. They had the designation of Wisconsin’s official state dog in 1986. Generally this breed has originated from united states. Though there is no perfect information about its origin, it is said that it may be the descendant of the curly coated retriever, the old English water spaniel and the Irish water spaniel.
General Description
The American water spaniel is restless in nature and it has a muscular physique. They have a long broad skull and they are medium in height. They have long ears covered with curly fur. The ears are such long that sometimes they have to be tied up while they are fed other wise the ear down tips get dirty with the food bristles. Their eye colour varies from dark brown to black and they have a brown or black coat generally. They are also found in chocolate shades. The American water spaniel have sharp teeth enough for a scissor bite and they also have a long hanging tail with a slight upward curve.
Character
The American water spaniel is very much restless, energetic and obedient in nature. They are very enthusiastic and love to play games. This breed is a hunting breed and loves excitement. These dogs are great hunters and are basically used for hunting rabbits, ducks, grouse etc. They are very friendly, always try to please their masters and very intelligent. It is easy to train American water spaniels as they are always eager to learn. The trainers should have real patience in training them as impatience may make things worse. The American water spaniels are very much sensitive to harsh classes. They are excellent to children and great swimmers. Some of them may snore and have spitting problem.
Temperament
The American water spaniels are loyal, enthusiastic, restless but obedient at the same time. They are good to children and other pets but sometimes they may become harsh to animals or dogs they do not know. This breed is good for household and are also very good to strangers if properly introduced. Sometimes they may become one master dog. They may listen to only one person in the family. They are great watch dogs and bark too much. Their extreme alertness and protectiveness make them tremendous watch dogs. They love to get attention and care from other people. Things may get worse if they are teased.
Training
Training and socialization should be started at a very early age as this breed is very slow in grabbing things and get matured at a snail speed. Harsh training methods should not be applied as the American water spaniels are very much sensitive to harsh trainings.
Health
They are generally not affected by any diseases except skin problem. This breed requires a big amount of exercise. Their average life span is 12-15 years and litter rate is 4-6.
