Origin
The American Foxhounds are the direct children of the English and French hounds. In the 17th century they were used to find out Indians. This breed was very much used for hunting wild animals. They were mainly kept by wealthy people for hunting foxes.
General Description
This breed is generally lighter and taller in height than other British dogs. They are very swift and agile. They look handsome. They are tall with thin straight limbs. The American Foxhound has big ears hanging flat beside their head and their tail is long which rises in the air and it is a bit curled towards its tip. They are found in many colours and they have a thin coat.
Character
American Foxhound is a very well built and athletic breed and also have a lot of stamina. They are very good hunters just as scent hounds. They are highly socialized, very much active in their work and have high tolerance power. The American Foxhounds are extremely hard workers and at the same time they are very close and loving to their families. Some are protective but most of them are good to strangers. their bark is not at all famous.
Temperament
The American Foxhounds behave very gently, they are very good to their families and at the same time they are very courageous as they are good hunters. Not at all protective to their families, very good to children and a very sweet breed. They are extremely good to children and other dogs but you cannot trust them with non canine pets. They have such melodious barks that the tones have been used in many songs. They are so sharp in nature that many of them learn how to open gates. As they are great warriors if they get a scent once they will follow it by neglecting all commands. They are not at all apartment dogs and should not be left alone for a long time. The foxhounds are not good watchdogs but they are good hunters.
Training
The American Foxhounds are very difficult to housebreak. They should be socialized properly in order to prevent them from being timid and aloof. American Foxhound should be trained properly with firmness. As they are the hunter dogs they should be trained like that.
Health
The American Foxhounds are much more healthy compared to other dogs. They do not suffer from hip or bone problem as others. They should not be given excessive food as they have a tendency of putting on weight. Thei average life span is 10-12 years and litter rate is 5-7. The American Foxhounds have a short haired coat which is generally easy to groom and maintain. They are very active breed and need a lot of exercise regularly.
