Origin

American Akitas have generally evolved from the northern regions of Japan. In many countries American Akita is considered different from Akita Inu but they are considered as the same in US and Canada. Most of the times the American Akita is just called Akita.

General Description

The appearance of Akitas represent the cold weather as they mainly originate from the northern regions of Japan. Akita is a very firm breed for its good height and bone weight. They have a large bulky head with triangle shaped ears standing erect. They have black eyes and their feet is like the one of the cat. This is a double coated breed with a curly tail on its back. They are almost found in all colours.

Character

Akitas are very good natured dogs but if proper training is not given they can become really ill behaved and dangerous. Their size is large and they are bold by nature. The Akitas are also very brave. Their alert nature make them excellent guard dogs. They Akitas prove to be tremendous swimmers and their padded paws make that easy for them. They are great learners and they response is good. For that reason they can be trained properly. But if proper socialization is not provided they can become unpredictable. The Akitas do not mix well with the strangers. Their family members should treat them with love and affection. The part of caution is that they should not be disturbed. In such cases they may even bite and to prevent such situations proper socialization should be given. Akitas can really become great companions and very well behaved dogs if they are trained properly.

Temperament

This Akita is very strong and has a lot of courage. The breed is very much loyal and devoted to their families. They are very fond of human interaction and prove to be great companions. They love to remain attached to their families. Akitas are very much protective of their family. They also love to protect their food, belongings and their community. Generally the Akitas are very good dogs but if not socialized properly then they would become unpredictable. This breed is excellent to kids of the family. They are good to all who they are familiar with. The Akita is very aggressive to other animals or pets. They love their families very much and you should not leave them alone for long time. Not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.

Training

The breed is very intelligent and keen learner. They are always very eager to learn but sometimes they can be stubborn and independent. If they are not properly trained and socialized from childhood they can become ill behaved. They should be treated consistently, fairly and firmly.

Health

Akitas may suffer from hip dysplasia like many other dogs. Thyroid problems, skin problems and eye diseases are some of the common limitations of this breed. Their average life span is 10-14 years and average litter rate is 7-8 puppies.
