Origin
The Akita Inus have generally originated from Japan and they are also the national dog of Japan. They were generally kept by the aristocrat people as a symbol of aristocracy. They were used for various purposes like guard dogs, hunters etc.
General Description
The Akita Inus are similar to Japanese spitz. This breed is strongly built with a flat beefy head. They have dark noses, dark brown eyes, pink tongue, black lips and erect ears. They have sharp teeth like scissors. Akita Inus have a fluffy coat with a soft undercoat. They are mainly found in white, cheese or sometimes black colour.
Character
Akita Inus are very good in nature but if they are not properly trained then they really become unpredictable in certain situations. They are large in size, strongly built and bold in nature. Their webbed paws make them great swimmers. They can become good watchdogs as they are very alert and courageous. Training this breed is easy as they are highly responsive but if not trained properly they become very dominating. Akita Inus hesitate in mixing with strangers. They should be treated with a great deal of understanding and respect by family members. If teased some of them even may bite you but not all behave like that. To prevent such types of aggressive behaviour they should be socialized and trained from early age. If proper training is provided then Akita Inu can become as gentle, sober and loving as other breeds.
Temperament
This breed is very intelligent, brave and impulsive. They are very much attached to human beings, very loyal to their families but take time to mix with the strangers.Akita Inu is very much desperate in protecting their families, food and territory. They are good in nature but not always. Akita Inus are very polite and sober to children of the family but not to them who they do not know. They are also harsh to other pets. This breed does not bark much but they prove to be excellent guard dogs. Akitas don’t like to be left alone for a long period so they are best suited for joint families. Not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.
Training
Akita Inu requires a concentrated and through training on how to behave properly. They need to be socialized properly. Harsh training methods are not recommended as things may get worse due to hash approach. They are very much aware of their master and love to take the charge in his absence. In comparison to other breeds Akitas can be more easily house trained.
Health
Akita Inu may be affected by hip dysplasia like many other breeds. Thyroid problems, skin problems, knee problems and eye diseases are some of the common limitations of this breed. Their average life span is 10-12 years and average litter rate is 7-8 puppies.
