Origin
Airedale Terrier originated from Aire river region of England primarily by breeding a terrier with an otter hound in the mid of 1980s. The working class people of Yorkshire used these dogs to hunt the large rats which were found in the Aire river banks. The killing of rats by Airedale Terrier became as important and exciting as live matches and spectators would surround all over to enjoy the match. The matches continued till1950s.
General Description
Airedale Terriers are the largest breed of terriers. They have a nicely balanced body with firm legs and deep chest. The Airedale Terriers have a log head with the ears hanging in front of the face. The Airedale terriers have sharp teeth and a straight curly tail. They have a thick coat of bristled hair lined with a fluffy and soft undercoat. This breed is generally found in tan colour and it may also have spots of black and red.
Character
They are courageous, active, protective but still a sweet breed. Not recommended for the average family. Firm handling is required in case of the Airedale Terrierdue to its stubborn nature. Vigorous and protective at certain times. They have a tendency of pleasing people. Love to get attention and fell happy when loved and appreciated by others. They play rough with children but can be very good pets if proper training is provided. If threatened the Airedale Terrier get nervous. Gets distracted by small animals, other dogs or food. The breed is very loyal, patient and kind. If trained properly they listen to every command of the master.
Temperament
Airedale Terriers are brave, confident, fun loving and protective breed. They are very loyal and intelligent also. They love to chase small animals. Really good to children if they have an early exposure but play rough with small ones. This breed is friendly with the strangers. They can be trained at a high level as they are sensitive and responsive. The Airedale terrier is a good hunter. They can become very ill behaved if proper physical and mental exercise is not given daily. These dogs are easy to train but situations can become worse is harsh methods are applied. Its protective attitude makes it a good watchdog. They are good to cats and other animals but sometimes they are very dominating over other dogs. This actually depends on the procedure of training.
Training
This dog is sometimes very adamant and obstinate in nature but at the same time they are very sporty. Things may get worse due to harsh trainings so gentle training is required. Experienced handler is required in case of Airedale Terrier.
Health
Airedale Terriers are mainly affected by hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, bleeding disorders and eye problem. Due to rough skins the may be affected to skin problems also. To prevent that they should be fed a certain amount of omega fatty acids. Airedale Terriers have a life span from 10-14 years. Please make sure that both parents of the puppy you are purchasing are OFA certified.
