Overview

The Afghan Hound is a very antique breed. Pictures of this breed are also found in caves of Northern Afganistan which are more than 400 years old. This breed was generally used by the shepherds once upon a time. They were used as hunters and watch dogs. It was discovered in the western regions of Afganistan in the 19th century.

General Description

Afghan Hounds are tall and they have lengthy athletic limbs. They have narrow head ,sharp features and strong jaw. They have a skinny figure, shaggy tail and medium length ears which hang flat to their heads. The Afghan Hounds have a less fat in their body and they have a silky coat. They are usually found in grey colour with darker markings around their face.

Character

Afghan hounds belong to a aristocratic and formal nature which makes them perfect. They do not mix too much with human like other breeds but they love to stay aloof sometimes. They are also kingly, gentle ands kind by nature. This breed is a timid one so rough or harsh training should not be undertaken. They should be trained with utmost care and patience. Afghan Hounds are called the king of dogs. They are polished, refined and stylish in nature. At the same time they are also noble and graceful. Afghan Hounds love to be independent and do not easily mix with outsiders. They take time to trust strangers. Yes these are family dogs but may become disobedient due to improper training. If this breed is given the proper home and family then this can become the light of your life.

Temperament

Afghan Hounds are very timid, calm and noble in nature. They are very good to old children and can mix well with other animals provided they are associated with them. They always stay aloof and serious but they are funny when they play. It is independent in nature and dedicated to its family, which has helped it survive as a breed for several years. They take time to mix with strangers. The Afghan Hound is a lively and active breed with a very individual personality. Some of them may be noisy and mischievous but most of them are calm and quiet. This breed does not like to stay alone and may be destructive if they are neglected. Those who are experienced in dog ownership can tackle them the best. The Afghan Hound dog is ok with other dogs but may chase smaller creatures. Inactive families stay away from this breed as they need a good amount of exercise. High fences are required around the house as the Afghan Hound dog is a good jumper.

Training

Proper training is recommended. Training should be polite as the Afghan Hound is very sensitive and timid in nature. But they can behave in a destructive and disobedient manner if proper training is not provided.

 

Health

Afghan Hounds have high tendency of allergies. Very sensitive breed with a low tolerance power. In spite of being a healthy breed slight injuries may become serious. Due to low percentage of fat they are highly curbed by anesthesia. Need a lot of exercise. Their life span is long averaging from 12-14 years in maximum cases. Average litter rate is 8. They may also be affected by thyroid problems.
